Kumho Signs on to Develop Sustainable Tyre Materials
In a significant stride towards sustainability, global tyre manufacturer Kumho Tyres has recently announced a strategic collaboration with Orion, a major material supplier. The two industry leaders have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop sustainable materials aimed at revolutionising the production of more eco-friendly vehicle tyres.
This partnership marks a pivotal moment in the automotive industry's quest for sustainability, as
Kumho Tyres and
Orion embark on a research project to innovate tyres using renewable feedstocks. These feedstocks include plant-based oils and other bio-oils, along with carbon black derived from pyrolysis oils extracted from end-of-life tyres.
Kumho Tyres commitment to environmental responsibility is evident in its collaboration with
Orion to expand the use of eco-friendly carbon black in tyre manufacturing.
Orion, a leading global supplier of carbon black, specialises in delivering tailored solutions for various applications, including tyres, coatings, batteries, and plastics.
Notably, this isn't
Kumho Tyres
first step into sustainable innovation. Last year, the company forged an MoU with
Synthos, a Polish group, to jointly develop sustainable tyre raw materials. Synthos, with its ISCC+ certification from the European Union Renewable Energy Directive System, is dedicated to reducing environmental impact and is set to complete a bio-butadiene manufacturing plant by 2027.
The collaboration with
Synthos aims to explore the use of Bio-Butadiene (Bio-BD) in the production of NdBR, a type of synthetic rubber, thereby advancing the integration of eco-friendly materials into tyre manufacturing processes. With production bases in Germany, the Czech Republic, and Poland, Synthos is strategically positioned to drive sustainable solutions in partnership with tyre manufacturers.
Kumho Tyres relentless pursuit of sustainability is underscored by its track record of innovation. In 2022, the company developed a tyre composed of 55% sustainable materials, earning recognition with an A-grade in the 2023 ESG evaluation by the Korea ESG Standards Authority. Building on this success, Kumho Tyres achieved a breakthrough in 2023 with a tyre comprising 80% sustainable materials.
Looking ahead,
Kumho Tyres has set ambitious goals to exclusively use natural-based and recycled materials in its products by 2045. This vision aligns with the global imperative to mitigate climate change and reduce the automotive industry's carbon footprint.
As
Kumho Tyres drives forward on its sustainability journey, collaborations with industry partners like
Orion and
Synthos serve as catalysts for innovation and progress. By prioritising sustainability in tyre manufacturing, Kumho Tyres is not only reshaping the future of mobility but also demonstrating its commitment to environmental stewardship. Together, these initiatives indicate a greener, more sustainable era for the automotive industry.
With these pioneering collaborations,
Kumho Tyres is steering the automotive industry towards a more sustainable future, one eco-friendly tyre at a time.
